The adenoma detection rate (ADR) is considered the best validated colonoscopy performance quality indicator and is used to ensure that the gastroenterologists are conducting an adequate, thorough exam of the colon. The number refers to the proportion of patients who underwent a colonoscopy who had 1 or more adenomas detected during their exam.
Experts in the field have recommended a benchmark ADR of ≥ 30% in men and ≥20% in women or ≥25% in a mixed male/female population at average risk for colorectal cancer.
In the past year, our practice has achieved an average ADR of 59% in women an 63% in men, which is significantly above the established benchmark and which speaks to the quality and thoroughness of our endoscopists in identifying polyps.
